About Harris Tweed

Formed by the Landscape

Heritage, with a Twist

Harris Tweed is more than just a fabric; it’s a piece of heritage woven with the spirit of the rugged, wind-swept islands of the Outer Hebrides. Each thread is spun from pure wool which has been dyed with a particular blend of deep colours and tones, and handwoven by skilled artisans who pass down their craft through generations. The result is a fabric that tells the story of both nature and tradition, wild hillsides, rolling seas, and those who call these islands home.

Though its rich texture and timeless patterns like herringbone, checks, and houndstooth have long been associated with stately jackets and coats, at LUMEN we believe that Harris Tweed is far more than a symbol of classic British style. It’s a practical, versatile fabric, designed for the elements, and capable of standing the test of time. The wool's natural warmth, breathability, and durability make it the perfect companion for adventures, whether it’s a brisk walk through the countryside or a quiet stroll through a city street.

At LUMEN, we embrace this living, breathing textile that adapts to both modern life and timeless elegance, offering comfort and style far beyond its roots. Each piece of Harris Tweed is as unique as the person who wears it, a lasting connection to a land that continues to inspire.

Caring for your Harris Tweed

Pleasantly Low Maintenence

Harris Tweed is made from 100% pure wool, which is naturally anti-bacterial, water-resistant and odour resistant, making Harris Tweed a very low-maintenance fabric.

  • If your garment just needs a freshen up, hang outside in the sun and then press with a medium-heat iron.

  • If you’ve spilled something on it, most things will come off with a damp sponge.

  • If an all-over wash is necessary, dry clean or handwash only.

  • If your Harris Tweed item features Cyanotype, this must be hand-washed to preserve the beautiful hues.
